Q: Is the API pay-per-use or prepaid?

A: Both, depending on the plan. Pay as you go is a one-time top-up: buy any credit pack, use it whenever you need it, and the credits never expire. Annual plans are billed upfront for the year, which is what makes the discounted rate possible, up to 57% lower than Wallet.

Q: Can I test the API on a free trial?

A: Yes. The 14-day free trial gives you 100K API credits across all six API endpoints, as well as MCP server access. You also get access to the complete SEO and GEO suite by SE Ranking. No credit card required.

Q: Do unused credits roll over?

A: It depends on the plan:

• Wallet credits never expire. Buy a 250K pack today and use it two years from now.
• On annual plans (standalone and add-on), credits are provided upfront and expire at the end of the billing cycle. Unused credits don’t carry over. Any additional top-ups purchased on top of a subscription never expire.
• Free trial credits expire at the end of your 14-day window.

Q: What is a "credit" and how much does each call cost?

A: Credits are the unit that SE Ranking uses to measure API usage. Every successful call consumes credits from your balance. Failed requests are not charged. Costs vary by endpoint and are applied in one of two ways: a fixed number of credits per successful request, or a variable number of credits per record returned. See the full breakdown here.

Q: What’s the difference between the Data API and the Project API?

A: The Data API gives you raw SEO data on demand, including keyword volumes, backlink profiles, AI Search results, site audit data, and more. It’s charged in credits. The Project API manages your SE Ranking workspace: create projects, add keywords to tracking, schedule audits, pull reports. It draws on your subscription project limits, not credits.
As a rule of thumb: use the Data API for ad-hoc queries and AI agents; use the Project API for ongoing tracking of a fixed list of keywords or sites.

Q: How quickly can I get an API key after purchase?

A: Instantly. Your API key is issued immediately after payment. If you are on a free trial, you’ll get an API key once you confirm your email. Find your keys within the API dashboard.

Q: Do credits reset each month, or is the balance cumulative?

A: On annual plans, credits are provided upfront for the billing cycle and expire at the end of it. Unused credits don’t carry over to the next cycle. On Wallet, the balance is fully cumulative. Every top-up adds to your total with no expiry.
